The kusudama consists of three shells. Use 3 squares of paper, identical in size. You will also need paper glue.

Start with colored side down. Valley fold the square in half from bottom to top. Press it flat and unfold it.   Valley fold the bottom and top edges to meet the middle fold-line.
  Divide the rectangle into 8 equal vertical sections by valley folding. Press the folds flat and unfold them.
