Origami Base Forms

In origami there are some basic forms, which represent certain sets of creases. The accepted term for such patterns is base forms. Usually, each base is named after the best-known model for which it is used. Not all models of origami are created from the base forms, but when training origami, it is good to know them.

There are rather simple traditional base forms, for example, such as the BOOK FOLD and SHAWL FOLD consisting of one crease. Shawl fold has other names such as a diaper or triangle fold. The following traditional forms are built on the above simple forms.

The book fold develops into the CUPBOARD FOLD. The shawl fold develops into the KITE BASE. The kite base is the foundation of the DIAMOND BASE and FISH BASE.

The more complex forms follow further. For example, folding the BLINTZ BASE it is possible to begin from either from the book fold or from the shawl fold.

The W-BOAT is used very often. It develops from the cupboard fold. The w-boat is known also as a catamaran or pig form.

Only add two creases else and the w-boat base turns into the WINDMILL BASE.

The following complex base is called the BALLOON BASE. It is also known as the waterbomb, because the traditional model of the "waterbomb" begins with it. There are several ways to fold the balloon base. One of them is submitted in the diagram of the Candy-box, which you can find in the Origami Studio.

One of most frequently used forms is the SQUARE BASE. It is known as well as a basic flower form ('hana-no kihon-kei' in Japanese) or preliminary fold. It is the foundation for several bases and an innumerable amount of models. As all complex forms, the square base has various ways of folding.

Also it is interesting, that the square base and balloon base have the same number of "Mountain" and "Valley" creases. If you turn the square base inside out, the balloon base will result. And on the contrary, if you turn the balloon base inside out, the square base will result. These traditional forms demonstrate one of miracles of origami.

The square base develops into the FRUIT BASE, which is very FRUITful for creation of volumetric berries, vegetables and fruits. This base is rarely enumerated in the line of the origami bases. This form was so named by the Shumakovs in their creations.

The BIRD BASE is a well known classical form. It is named as a "bird" base, because it is a starting point for the traditional crane, flapping bird and many others birds. This form is very interesting, it is used to make a vast range of origami models, including the famous Crane which is authenticated to be more than 200 years old, and in reality it may be older. That’s why this base is known also as the crane base.

The FROG BASE is one of the best-know classic origami bases. It is so named after the well-known model of the traditional 'Frog' for which it is used. Folding of this form goes through the square base and the fruit base.

The SNAIL BASE follows after the frog base. The Shumakovs have marked this base and named after the model of the Snail that was created by them. The diagrams of the Snail can be seen in the Origami Studio. Depending on a way of folding the snail base, it can use the frog base or the bird base as its foundation.

So, we have considered with you fifteen base forms. We hope that the acquaintance with them will help you in your study of the art of origami.
