From
Foreword by Rachel Katz
Just
when I thought I'd seen everything in origami that Yuri and Katrin Shumakov
have produced, they present this marvelous book, replete with origami
models with such flair and originality that I couldn't wait to try them.
These
creators of a whole world of origami called Oriland have enchanted the
public and particularly the origami community with their magical models
and marvelous diagrams. Besides eight whole cities complete with origami
castles, various modes of transportation, statues and endearing creatures
of all sorts, the prolific Shumakovs have produced CD Roms and other books
of their original models. One CD has dinosaur skeletons of all sorts and
another, 'Oribana' is filled with exquisite flower arrangements with thousands
of picture diagrams. A third CD has 100 Oriland originals. All are available
through their web site.
I came to know
Katrin and Yuri Shumakov through the Internet where I found their amazing
PhD thesis on origami and the activation of the whole brain. Having taught
origami for some thirty years, and seeing first hand the educational benefits,
it was thrilling to find the scientific evidence they produced to back
it up.
Since Yuri and
Katrin are as generous with their time as they are with their diagrams
(some 70 are available at their award winning website: www.oriland.com),
we struck up a friendship. Their capabilities as web designers won them
a trip to the United States where I met them for the first time. Later,
we were to meet again when they were guests of honor at the origami convention
in New York hosted by Origami USA. Here they wowed the 700+ attendees
with their huge exhibition. Now, with this book you can begin to see what
all the excitement is about. I hope you enjoy 'Origami Chic' and soon
you'll be hooked on what a little imagination and clever fingers can produce.
Have fun folding these fabulous fashions!
